An environmental group will meet this weekend to discuss its efforts to halt radioactive waste disposal at a proposed site in Lea County.
The Alliance for Environmental Strategies will meet Dec. 9, 9 a.m to 5 p.m. at Comfort Suites, 3610 N. Main St. Dec. 9. Lunch will be provided, and a $20 donation is requested.
The group will discuss the proposed underground interim storage facility for spent fuel being developed by Holtec International based in Jupiter, Florida, and the Eddy Lea Energy Alliance LLC, an entity owned by the cities of Carlsbad and Hobbs and the counties of Lea and Eddy. The site would be about halfway between Carlsbad and Hobbs and about 12 miles from the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant site near Carlsbad.
