Patrick “Pat” Stevenson of Columbia SC passed away on January 10, 2018 at the age of 64. He was born on January 05, 1954 in Modesto California and was a resident of Roswell and Lincoln County from 1963 to 1973 and again from 1985 to 1995.
Pat left California with its scenic green beauty for the New Mexico high desert when he was just a child. His mother, Erma Stevenson, had family in the Pecos Valley and young Pat spent several summers with his adoring grandparents in Tularosa. As a teenager living in Ruidoso he was known to his family and friends as being head strong and sometimes stubborn, characteristics that would help to mold him into a man who was both decisive and uncompromising. The Sacramento Mountains were an ideal place to learn how to hunt, especially deer, with his friends. His hobby turned into a passion that he enjoyed tremendously and that stuck with him all his life. School didn’t interest him much but work did and when he was old enough he began his working life off with construction. It was satisfying to his nature by engaging his internal drive to do something with the added bonus of earning a paycheck. The consequence of this was a development of a work ethic at a young age.
Pat loved his horses. He used his horses to access hard to reach terrain during hunts and for the enjoyment of their beauty. He took great pride in them and loved to be involved in breaking them. He never backed down from training his horses, no matter how many times this 5’8” man jumped on their backs, and no matter how many times they bucked him off, he would get up and continue. Never excepting defeat his trademark stubbornness kept him motivated and going. Pat also raised and loved his dogs who were like family too him. He had big dogs like German Sheppard’s and their companionship provided him a faithful friend with unconditional love.
Mr. Stevenson met a young lady named Tracy Browning in Ruidoso New Mexico who became the love of his life. The two left Ruidoso for Columbia South Carolina 12 years ago where Patrick lived until his passing. He was a man who didn’t want to burden family and always kept complaints to himself. After a struggle with cancer he was fortunate for it to go into remission. During this experience, this self-reliant man found himself turning to faith and finding hope in something much bigger than himself. He never gave up and fought the good fight even till the end.
He is survived by his daughter Paige Medeirus and twin grandchildren of Solomon KS; partner Tracy Browning of Columbia South Carolina; brothers Lonnie and Rick Stevenson of Roswell NM; sisters Juelan. Rushing of Ruidoso NM and Deana Osterman of Tucson AZ: and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents Jack and Erma Stevenson and sister Carrie Tydlaska.
Per his request he will be cremated and no services are scheduled at this time.
