Three people apply for vacant school board seat; Candidates will be interviewed in open session by current board members


A loan supervisor, an ordained pastor and a retired professor have applied for the vacant position on the Roswell school board.

Seven local leaders have been selected to serve on the Roswell Industrial Air Center Task Force, with an eighth member expected to be named soon.

United Way evolves to meet greater needs

Sherry Mumford, Executive Director of United Way of Chaves County, is excited about the future of the organization and it’s capacity to make a difference for non-profit organizations in Chaves County. They had their new campaign kickoff at the Civic Center Monday.

Warrant issued for murder suspect


An arrest warrant was issued Friday afternoon for a Roswell man accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend during an argument at a Roswell hotel earlier this month.

Thomas Christian Berckes


After a year and a half, Thomas Christian Berckes lost his battle with cancer, Thursday, August 10, 2017. A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2801 W. Fourth St., Roswell, NM, on Saturday, August 19, at 1 p.m.
Tom was born March 28, 1973, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to Bill and Connie Berckes. In 1983, the family moved to Lancaster, Ca, where Tom graduated from Antelope Valley High School and California Lutheran University. He worked for Advent Ministries in Gilroy, CA, High Desert Counseling, Ridgecrest, CA. In 1998, he moved to Cloudcroft and worked at Camp Chimney Spring and the Cloudcroft schools. In 2000, the family moved to Roswell. Tom held many part-time jobs before getting a full-time job with Rowell transit system. Tom enjoyed music and magic. He was an active member of the church choir and chimes, and played with the Roswell Community band.
Tom is preceded in death by his mother Connie, his grandparents Ted and Jane Berckes. He is survived by father Bill of Roswell, brother James and his wife Kimberly, nieces Erika, Cassandra and nephew Cameron, of Lancaster, Ca,. sister Dottie Berckes, nephews Lee, Lane and niece Brendalynn, of Alamogordo, NM, uncle Ken Berckes and his wife Kathy of Bakersfield, CA, uncle Jonathon Wood and his wife Jane, aunt Susan Payne and husband Richard, and numerous cousins.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Memorial fund or any cancer research organization.
