Mildred, aka, Mom, Grandma, GG Great, was born on Feb. 6, 1914. Her parents Arthur Russell and Amelia (Swanson) lived in Chicago, Illinois, where Mildred was born and grew up during the Great Depression. They lived in a modest house with her mom, dad and younger brother Bud.

Mom met her husband, Harris, on a blind date in Chicago. They married and lived there for five years. While they were courting, their favorite thing to do was dance.

Living in Chicago during the Big Band Era, they were able to go to some of the best ball rooms available at the time, including the Aragon and the Trianon Ballrooms. There they danced to the bands of Lawrence Welk, Glenn Miller and the Dorsey Brothers. These are her most favorite memories.

Their first child, Janet Faye, was born in 1943 and then in 1945, George Russell was born. Realizing that their apartment was getting crowded, they built a house in Lombard, Illinois in 1946, where they lived until the late 1860s after the “kids” were gone and Dad was offered a position working in Jeffersonville, Indiana.

They stayed there several years until Dad’s health dictated they move to Florida. They flourished there and lived next to Mom’s father and step-mother. After Mom’s father passed away and later Dad, she continued to live in Florida, enjoying her friends, the weather and the activities there until Sept. 11, 2001.

Realizing that the world was changing and she needed to live closer to her kids, we moved her to Roswell in October of 2001. She initially stayed with George and Patty until we all came to the conclusion that she would be happier if she moved to be nearer her peer age group and in 2006 she moved to what was then Villa Del Rey, now Brookdale Country Club.
