A new hotel with a familiar name has opened, adding another 80 rooms to the city’s commercial lodging industry.
The Holiday Inn Express & Suites, a building project totaling more than $8 million, started business May 9. It is located on Military Heights, just off of North Main Street.
“It went great,” owner Gurvinder Singh, one of the partners of the GB Hotel Group, said about the project. “The city was great to work with. It was the quickest process and one of the fastest hotels we’ve opened in the country.”
The new hotel is the upgrade for the former Holiday Inn at 2300 N. Main St. That property has been converted to a Baymont Inn, part of the Wyndham Hotel Group, said its manager, Justin Jones.
Both hotels are owned by GB Hotel Group of Santa Cruz, California, with the new hotel operating under the name Homestead Hospitality LLC. Together they employ about 40 to 50 people, Singh said.
The Holiday Inn Express on North Main Street a few blocks from the Roswell Mall is owned by a different company.
“It is a Formula Blue hotel,” said manager Jill Cleveland about the newly opened property. “The concept is all about quiet. The rooms are quiet so that you can’t hear the outside.”
She added that guest rooms in the four-floor building have been separated from areas likely to have a lot of noise or traffic, such as the pool and spa or the meeting areas. No rooms are above the pool, either.
The hotel also is designed to have a modern appearance with large, open common areas and modular furnishings.
The construction of the new hotel was prompted by the InterContinental Hotel Group, which manages the Holiday Inn Express brand.
To remain a Holiday Inn Express, the hotel had to meet the Formula Blue standards, which also include environmentally efficient lighting and ventilation systems.
Singh previously said that the firm had determined it was better to build a new hotel than to renovate the existing one. The Baymont Inn is anticipating a future renovation but can make the changes while remaining open, Cleveland said.
“As each brand has its own standards, we will be making some interior changes,” Singh confirmed.
Both hotels are considered mid-market lodging, charging about $129 to $189 a night for regular rooms.
Sigh said his group owns other property in the city, as well as other hotels and business concerns elsewhere, but doesn’t have plans for more development in Roswell at this time.
“We will see how the year progresses,” he said. “Right now, we are just focusing on these two hotels and getting their occupancy rates up.”
According to information from the Roswell Hotel and Hospitality Association, the city now has 25 hotels and 1,473 rooms.
