Three people have been charged with assaulting a police officer after a traffic stop Saturday in Ruidoso.
The Ruidoso Police Department said officer Robert Rushton initiated a traffic stop Saturday after he observed a pickup speeding on U.S. Route 70. During the course of the traffic stop, police said Rushton requested a current registration and insurance for the vehicle, which police said was displaying a temporary tag.
“After a disagreement about the validity of the temporary tag was raised, there was an altercation that ensued,” the Ruidoso Police Department said in a news release issued Wednesday.
Police said Raymond Fajardo, 60, Larry Thompson, 51, and Michael Wilson, 38, were arrested at the scene. Each of them was charged with battery on a peace officer, resisting, evading or obstructing an officer, and tampering with evidence.
Fajardo, Thompson and Wilson were transported to the Ruidoso Police Department where they each posted $5,000 cash or surety bonds and were released.
Police said the driver of the vehicle was cited with speeding.
