Clayton Alred, president of Eastern New Mexico University-Ruidoso, is retiring, ENMU president Steven Gamble has announced.
“I am sorry to see Dr. Alred depart,” Gamble said. “ENMU-Ruidoso is a stronger institution as a result of his seven-plus years of leadership. His successor will find that he or she has inherited a first-class community college. All of us in the ENMU system will miss Clayton Alred.”
Alred said, “Conventional wisdom instructs us to leave a position while you still love it. I have loved serving the Ruidoso campus and that affection will continue.”
Alred said family obligations were among the primary factors in his decision. He and wife, Catherine, will continue to reside in Ruidoso following retirement and plan to do some traveling.
Gamble said that Alred will remain as president until a successor is named.
Gamble is also retiring at the end of July. His successor, Jeff Elwell, a dean at the University of Tennessee at Chatanooga, has been hired for a three-year term.
The Eastern New Mexico University system includes a main campus in Portales and branch universities in Roswell and Ruidoso.
