Elks care, Elks share in New Mexico

Barajas is seen here giving the check to Steve Jones on June 2. Barajas and is wife Marcia encountered the father and son just after Thanksgiving last year. “Marcia & I were at Wal Mart and noticed an old mini-van pull up in the parking lot.,” Mike Barajas said. “A guy in his early 50s got out, opened the back and got out a wheelchair. He then opened the side door and lifted his son into the chair. The son is a pretty good sized boy and I could tell he was having difficulty. I walked up to him and asked what was wrong with his child. “He told me Cerebral Palsy. I told him the Elks may be able to help. I got an application form online, they filled it out and we took it to Denise Dawson, the lodge Secretary. She mailed it immediately to the State Association. The Elks donated $5,000 to the family which assisted them in buying a handicapped van. Their church in Capitan raised $20,000,” Mike Barajas said. (Submitted Photo)
