A teenaged-man was shot on the city’s south side Monday night and tried to drive himself to a local hospital before stopping at the corner of North Main Street and College Boulevard, where he was taken the rest of the way to the hospital.

Roswell Police Department spokesman Todd Wildermuth said the 19-year-old man told authorities he had been shot in the leg on the city’s southside.

“He reported being shot by someone who walked up to his vehicle while he was sitting in it at Town Plaza Apartments in the 1200 block of West McGaffey Street,” Wildermuth said. “The incident is under investigation, but the man is not cooperating with the investigation and does not want to pursue charges.”

Witnesses said the man had been shot in the area of McGaffey Street at about 8 p.m. After being taken to the hospital by ambulance at about 8:21 p.m., the victim’s sport utility vehicle remained at the intersection of North Main Street and College Boulevard where he pulled over, near New Mexico Military Institute.

“He called it in while driving and dispatch got him to pull over at College Boulevard and Richardson Avenue, where RPD and RFD responded about 8:15 p.m.,” Wildermuth said. “The man, 19, was transported by medical personnel to a hospital. His injury is not life-threatening.”
