Local youth will take to their saddles to show off their horsemanship today at the Chaves County 4-H and FFA Horse Show.

The free event is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Bob Crosby Arena at the Eastern New Mexico State Fairgrounds at 2500 S.E. Main St., according to a Facebook post of the Chaves County 4-H, which is coordinated by New Mexico State University.
The annual event has youth competing in various categories to show how well they have trained their horses and learned to handle their rides.

Youth in 4-H and Future Farmers of America typically participate as part of year-end programs. Categories often include showmanship and halter; Western pleasure; Western horsemanship; English hunt seat; hunter under saddle; trail and Western riding; and barrel and pole racing.
The event is expected to last about four to five hours, and prizes related to horse supplies or horse training are expected to be awarded in various categories.
