U.S. Route 380 east of Roswell remains closed tonight as police investigate a shootout involving a Chaves County sheriff’s deputy and a man.

Sheriff Britt Snyder said the gunfire on the highway about 40 miles east of Roswell, although no injuries were reported.

Snyder said the sheriff’s deputy was investigating a suspicious person report at a rest area when the suspect produced a handgun and fired in the deputy’s direction.

The sheriff said the deputy took cover behind his vehicle and returned gunfire before the suspect fled into the vast sand dunes.

Police said the suspect was apprehended about three hours later near where the shootout occurred, without incident.
