I believe the taking down of the Confederate monuments is equivalent to a Nazi book burning or Krystallnacht.
It reminds me of the Martin Neimoller quote,
“First they tore down the monuments, and I did not speak out — because I was not a southerner.
“Then they banned the books, and I did not speak out — because I was no longer in school.
“Then they came for the socialist, and I did not speak out — Because I was not a socialist.
“Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.”
We cannot and must not erase our history, either the good or the bad, but learn from it. We have created a culture where we believe we have a “right” not to be offended or even have our misconceptions challenged.
We have created a “snowflake” environment that demands safe spaces for anything that challenges the politically correct bias of the moment. Who is going to decide what is offensive and must be removed in the dead of night, the Nazi book burners?
We are truly living in an Orwellian world, “Those who control the present control the past, and those who control the past control the future.”
