The 2017 Cross Country season got under way Saturday at Gateway Christian School with 83 participants from more than 20 area schools participating in the “2K Blast” – a 2000 meter run for elementary and middle school students. Athletes started and finished on the Gateway Track and but ran most of the race in the open fields just South of the school.
In the Girls Middle School division, sisters Hannah and Sarah Lilley from Immanuel Lutheran School finished first and second and with a strong finish from teammate Minnie DeGroot helped their school win the travelling trophy for the first time in the five year history of this event.
The much larger Elementary Girls division saw defending Champion Gateway Christian School out pace a strong Valley View team. Neveah McDaniel from Gateway won the division with teammate Kimber Balok finishing 3rd just ahead of Valley View’s first two runners.
The fastest time of the day was turned in by 7th grade Gateway student Jace Worley who finished the 2000 meter (about 1.2 miles) course in a time of 8:13. Oscar Varela from Berrendo Middle School was second and with the help of his teammates, Berrendo was able to defend the team title for the second year in a row.
The most dominating performance might have come in the boys elementary school division boasting 32 runners from a dozen different schools. Quentin Martinez lead a Valley View Elementary School sweep of the top five places to retain the team trophy that they won last year.
