An explosion Friday near Carlsbad has killed three people, according to the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Mark A. Cage issued a news release Friday night indicating that deputies responded about 10:50 a.m. to a location off Grandi Road in reference to a possible explosion. They determined that a tank battery had exploded, and multiple fire and emergency personnel responded to the location to contain and extinguish the fire.
After containing the fire, three individuals were located and found to have suffered fatal injuries. Their identities have not been released as of Saturday afternoon.
The site of the explosion belongs to the New Mexico State Land Trust and is on the Ogden Ranch, according to a Land Office Facebook post. The Eddy County Sheriff’s Office release stated that the land is leased.

“It is with great sadness that I learned of the tragic accident and loss of life on State Trust Lands in Eddy County,” said Land Commissioner Aubrey Dunn in a posted statement. “On behalf of the State Land Office, I offer my deepest condolences to the families of the victims. The investigation is unfolding, and my staff is monitoring the situation and cooperating with authorities as needed.”
The Eddy County Sheriff’s Office Detective Division is heading the investigation and has asked people with information about the incident to contact Lt. Matthew Hutchinson or Deputy Martin Yackel at 575-887-7551.
