I’m writing on PETA’s behalf regarding an opinion piece by Russell A. Scott published by the Roswell Daily Record titled “Allowing PETA Into Our City’s Government” (Sept. 12, 2017), which includes a false claim about PETA.

Scott erroneously states that PETA “had to pay the circus $25 million to settle a racketeering counterclaim after it was alleged the organization had paid a former Ringling elephant trainer to be a plaintiff,” which is patently false.

PETA was not a party to the racketeering suit, which was a retaliatory action that Feld Entertainment brought against the ASPCA and others who had sued Feld over the abuse of endangered elephants used by the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
