Roswell heroes celebrated at banquet

Roswell’s Manuel R. Martinez, a decorated World War II Marine Corps veteran, prepares to say at few words at Saturday’s Heroes Banquet, which was hosted by Homes for Heroes of Chaves County. Martinez, who received the Silver Star for his service at the Battle of Iwo Jima and the Bronze Star for his service at the Battle of Saipan, said he was surprised and honored to have been chosen the Homes for Heroes veteran for 2017. Homes for Heroes presented awards Saturday to local police officers, firefighters, veterans and service members. Other award recipients not pictured are Roswell firefighter Carlos Garcia and state police officer Otis Rodriguez, who were unable to attend the banquet at the Roswell Convention & Civic Center.
