A Berrendo Middle School teacher is among the 16 finalists for the 2018 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Jessica Sanders is the only Chaves County teacher to be named a finalist this year for the honor given annually by the Golden Apple Foundation of New Mexico.

A total of seven award recipients will be selected from the 16 finalists through a rigorous application process, which includes site visits from the Golden Apple Selection Committee over the next several weeks. Recipients of the award receive several benefits, including induction into the Golden Apple Academy of Fellows, a professional development fund and a cash prize.

This year, 142 teachers were nominated from 26 different New Mexico communities. Finalists come from eight different cities, with Albuquerque the most represented.

This award is part of the foundation’s mission to catalyze teaching excellence through recognition, professional development and community engagement.

“The Golden Apple Award sends a message to the community that teachers are indispensable. That is a profound message, and our children hear it,” said Golden Apple Executive Director Brian O’Connell.
