This is the last weekend to attend the special series of workshops featuring the five senses in honor of National Deaf Awareness Month. This final one will be about the sense of taste and feature a tasting test where participants will be blindfolded to see if they can identify certain foods or profiles using only their taste buds.

This workshop is open to all ages, but space is limited, so if you’re interested in attending, make sure to arrive early. Contact the library by calling 575-622-7101, visiting us at 301 N. Pennsylvania Ave. or the website at roswell-nm.gov.

Now for something completely different — a fabulous nonfiction title. I had not heard of Lilly Singh before I checked out her book, which I did so because I loved the cover and the title, “How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life.”

Lilly Singh is a Canadian YouTube personality, vlogger, comedian, writer and actress. This is her first book and it’s a No.1 bestseller. Even if you don’t know who she is or have never watched one of her YouTube videos, the book was really fun to read. Yes, it’s about a serious subject, and yes, Lilly makes it fun. First, she defines “Bawse” — “like a boss, but so epic that I had to change the spelling.”

The book is divided into four sections with lots of short chapters, each filled with funny stories and anecdotes about life experiences. The first page of each chapter has a beautiful picture of Lilly doing something relative to the topic, like sitting in front of a clock for the chapter on scheduling or riding a bicycle for the chapter on being active.

Other chapters include, “Be Santa,” “No Piggybacks,” “Eliminate Stress,” and “Play Nintendo.” Lilly believes that to be successful, one must work hard or “climb stairs because there is no escalator to the top.” Pretty good advice from someone so young. She’s only 28.

At the beginning of the book, Lilly gives “Rules for Reading this Book,” the first one being every rule has an exception. There are comics, wonderful photos, pauses for the reader’s reflection and many fabulous quotes. Lilly even has a few very personal stories about bad times in her life; how she overcame those situations and what she learned from them.

It’s difficult to tell others about your shortcomings and yet her stories help others to understand her and how far she has come in life — and they lend credibility to her views on life. The examples are meant for us to use and adapt to our own situations. Lilly no longer has a Plan B, because that means that she expects Plan A to be a failure. Wow!

I really loved reading this book — you can go from cover to cover, or just pick out the chapters that interest you. Lilly challenges her readers to know what they want from life and then to go after it.

“How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life” is available from the Roswell Public Library in adult nonfiction and also as an audiobook (although you’ll miss out on the photos). Check one out now.
