The NMMI Bronco volleyball team took on the Midland College Chaparrals in Roswell Wednesday evening and swept them in three sets.
Despite being down most of the first set, the Broncos rallied and took game one 25-22.
Coach Shelby Forchtner said, “The first two games were a little bit of a heart attack. This was good for our team because we have been in this situation all year and come from behind to win games; they seem really calm in situations like this.”
The second set was a close one until the end, but the Broncos took this one in extended play, 28-26, to get a 2-0 on the Chaparrals, aided greatly by the attacking arms of Hannah Davis and McKayla Landreth.
“We had a few mistakes early in the second set, which allowed them to go back and serve and we had to fight back because of it..” coach Forchtner said.
“McKayla and Hannah were our go to players tonight, but we did a good job of spreading our offense around and giving everyone the ball when it was necessary.”
Davis had eight kills on 14 attempts and hit .357, while Landreth had eight kills on 18 attempts with a .278 hitting percentage.
Heading into the third set, NMMI had all the momentum and won 25-20 to complete the sweep of Midland College.
The Broncos will be on the road at the Tyler JC Invitational on Friday and Saturday and will be playing familiar foes.
In previous tournaments, NMMI has played Blinn College and Navarro College, losing to both in close matches. Coach Forchtner is looking for a different outcome this time around.
Their first match is set for 1:00 PM MDT on Friday and will take on Hill College.
