Distressed by Domenici’s passing

We are saddened to note the death of Sen. Pete Domenici. Sen. Domenici worked for many years on behalf of his constituents throughout the state of New Mexico, and his passing has been felt by many. He made many unique contributions to our state over the course of his public service, one of which was his advocacy for Character Counts throughout New Mexico.

Pete established, along with then Mayor Jennings, the Character Counts in Chaves County program beginning in 1994. He went on to establish community partnerships, as he preferred to characterize them, in support of Character Counts in communities throughout New Mexico, ultimately culminating in the establishment of the Character Counts Coalition.

Sen. Domenici was very supportive of Character Counts in Chaves County and with the support of his staff, primarily Poe and Nancy Corn, the program flourished over the years and has continued to strongly advocate for character throughout Chaves County.

He promoted community partnerships, as he believed that character education was not simply another problem for the public schools, but an issue of concern for communities as a whole. We have many fond memories of working with Pete Domenici and we are greatly distressed by the news of his passing.
