Two upcoming events at the Roswell JOY Center seek to provide expert advice and assistance to senior citizens, and several federal health insurance enrollment events are scheduled in Roswell for November and December.

Sponsored by the New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department, the JOY Center events will provide legal assistance and help with Medicare enrollment, according to Monica Duran, executive director of the Chaves County JOY Centers, which provides many services for area seniors.

Both events will be held at the Roswell JOY Center, 1822 N. Montana Ave.

On Thursday, Nov. 16, the state department will host a legal workshop. The event will begin with a 10 a.m. presentation by a lawyer. Seniors can then schedule appointments starting at about 11:30 a.m. to receive assistance with their health care directives or powers of attorney. People interested in a session with the attorney should contact the Roswell JOY Center, 575-623-4866, to schedule a time.

Medicare enrollment will be the focus of a Monday, Nov. 20, event to occur 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Seniors are again encouraged to call the JOY Center to schedule an appointment.

Representatives from the State Health Insurance Assistance Program will work with seniors to switch their Medicare plan or enroll for the first time in a Medicare health plan or a Medicare prescription plan. They also will screen to see if seniors qualify for extra help for prescriptions. The state department suggests seniors bring with them a list of their prescriptions, including the full name of the drug, the dosages and the strengths prescribed.

Many Medicare enrollment events will occur in cities throughout the state from October through December, and seven other enrollment events are scheduled for Roswell in addition to the one at the Roswell JOY Center.
