A $5,000 agricultural-related scholarship for one New Mexico student each year has been created.

The 505 Southwestern New Mexico True Scholars program was announced Friday by Gov. Susana Martinez.

The scholarship is a partnership between the 505 Southwestern brand of Flagship Food Group, based in Albuquerque, and New Mexico True, a marketing campaign of the New Mexico Tourism Department.

“The New Mexico True Scholars program is a great opportunity to help young students learn, grow and contribute to our state’s agricultural industry,” Martinez said.

Each year, this new scholarship will award $5,000 to one New Mexico high school graduate. Applicants must plan to attend an accredited college or university in New Mexico full time beginning fall 2018. Students also must demonstrate a commitment to making an impact in the agricultural industry or the overall economy of food and agriculture of New Mexico. The $5,000 award will be divided up in equal payments over four years of undergraduate study.

Flagship Food Group announced just last month that it is expanding its manufacturing and distribution facilities in the Albuquerque area and investing nearly $3 million in New Mexico. The expansion will create up to 200 new manufacturing and distribution jobs and support over 100 construction jobs.

The 505 Southwestern products of Flagship Food were the first to be certified as “New Mexico True.”

“Our business relies heavily on wonderful green chile of New Mexico. This is our way to say ‘thank you’ to the New Mexico agricultural community and to help foster the next generation of farmers and entrepreneurs in this important region,” said Rob Holland, chief executive officer at Flagship Food Group.

Scholarship applications are being accepted now and are due March 19. The recipient of the $5,000 scholarship will be announced in late April 2018.

Full eligibility requirements and the application can be found online at the state tourism website, newmexico.org.
