While some NFL players have recently taken a knee or sat on the bench during the national anthem, some local schools have made strong stands of their own about their convictions, faith and patriotism.

Some supporters of the Goddard High School football team wear T-shirts that say: “We won’t take a knee.”

And at Gateway Christian High School, Warrior football players have been making a statement about their faith before every home football game for the last 10 years.

The Gateway varsity football team has made the walk — the walk in which the players carry a large purple cross from one side of the field to the other end, where they drive the cross into the ground, and take a knee and pray together as a team.

The concept is nothing new for Gateway head football coach Shaun Wigley, who built the cross in his driveway in 2005.

“We aren’t trying to respond to something,” Wigley said. “We’ve been doing this for nearly a decade, because it’s never a bad time to do the right thing. We just believe that when we honor God first, everything else seems to fall in proper order.”

On Sept. 29, as they did their usual pre-game ritual, the Warriors marched to the song “Go Hard” by Lecrae. The event was recorded by Gary Thomas, who shared the video on Facebook. As of Oct. 4, the video had over 6.5 million views and over 230,000 shares.

As with each home game, the Warriors will carry the cross at their next game, which is at is 7 p.m. Friday against Tatum.
