ARTESIA — If a cardiologist was in attendance at Thursday night’s volleyball contest between Artesia and Goddard, they would’ve been needed as the District 4-5A contest was a heart stopper.

Artesia swept the Lady Rockets 3-0.

Don’t let that fool you, as the home team had to fight like a dog to win the match. Artesia took the opening game 25-21. They took game two 25-23 and they had to come from behind to take game three 25-21.

At one point in the final game, the Lady Rockets had a five point lead. Artesia was able to overtake the visitors for a spell and for the rest of the game it was close. However, the Lady Bulldogs were able to overcome Goddard’s blasts.

“We came out strong,” said Goddard head coach Kristi Hager of the third and final set. “We kind of lost it in the middle of the game.”

The loss drops Goddard to 5-11 overall and 0-2 in league play.

The Lady Rockets host Lovington Tuesday.

“Moving on to Lovington Tuesday, we gotta find a way to close these sets out,” Hager said.

Artesia is 15-1 overall and 2-0 in district play and will host Roswell Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Artesia had 38 kills in the game and senior Stacia Martinez led the way with seven; fellow senior Bailey Pearce had six.
