NMSP investigating an officer-involved shooting in Lovington

LOVINGTON — An 18-year-old Lovington man who briefly escaped police custody was arrested early Thursday on burglary charges.


New Mexico State Police say Karlo Sanchez Hernandez, 18, was arrested at a local business around 3 a.m. by the Lovington Police Department.

Hernandez was taken into custody and managed to escape, running toward the Panda Buffet in Lovington.

After a short foot pursuit, Hernandez was detained. During the apprehension, a shot was fired by a LPD officer. There were no injuries to the officers or Hernandez during the incident, according to police.

Agents from the NMSP Investigations Bureau were immediately notified and are currently conducting an investigation of the incident.

Hernandez was being held Thursday evening at the Lea County Detention Center.

The name of the officer involved and details of the shooting will not be released until after interviews are completed.
