ARTESIA — ”I think that’s a source of pride.”

That’s what Danny Parker said to the Artesia Public Schools Board of Education during the monthly meeting held on Oct. 16.

Parker is the assistant superintendent of federal programs and instruction for APS and he gave a report on ACT testing results for the Artesia class of 2017.

Figures show the national composite average is 21 percent. New Mexico’s average was 19.7 percent and Artesia’s rate was 19.92 percent.

Parker also said the Artesia participation rate in the ACT was higher than the national and state average.

The national rate was 60 percent, New Mexico’s was 66 percent and Artesia’s was 72.40 percent.

“We encourage more students to take that test,” he said.

Thad Phipps assistant superintendent of operations also asked the board to approve some items for his department.

They approved a bid of $66,493.36 to Speir Construction of Artesia to replace the gymnasium roof at Hermosa Elementary School. Phipps said the overflow drains need replacing.

The board also approved a low quote bid from Airgas for $28,954.42 for some new welding equipment for the new welding shop at Artesia High School.

Dr. Crit Caton APS superintendent talked about the number of meetings that have taken place in the last few months at the brand new administration building.

The New Mexico Legislative Education Study Committee met at the new facility. Caton said the district was ”excited to host that.”

He added that the Region 6 School Board also met there and it will also host a legislative reception in November.

The next meeting will be held Nov. 13 at 6 p.m.
