A royal ‘symphony of black and white’ horses

Friesian, Lipizzaner and Andalusian horses perform a “symphony of black and white” during the Gala of the Royal Horses Saturday afternoon at the Bob Crosby Arena on the Eastern New Mexico State Fairgrounds. The group of trained horsemen and horsewomen, led by Rene Gasser, in background, at left, on a black horse, have been traveling through the United States and will perform in Roswell again at 3 p.m. today. The shows include information about breeds and the training tradition, which dates back to the Renaissance but has its roots in even earlier times as horses were taken into battle.
