DEXTER — For a spell it looked like the Dexter Demons (6-5) and Texico Wolverines (2-9) were going to have a close contest Friday night in the opening round of the state 3A playoffs.

By the end of the first quarter Dexter had a 28-7 lead and at the end of the night the Demons advanced on with a 36-13 win over the visiting team.

The Demons play the No. 2 seed Capitan Tigers next week. Dexter ended the regular season Nov. 3 with a 48-22 loss to the Tigers.

Things were looking good for the Demons in the opening stages of the game. Dexter was able to shake off a couple of offensive miscues as Nick Cobos scored on a 2-yard run with 9:13 showing on the clock. The extra point kick was good and the score was 7-0.

Texico fumbled the ensuing kickoff and the Demons recovered, marching down the field for another touchdown. Jarren Amaro scored on a 1-yard run with 6:56 left in the first quarter. The extra point kick failed and it was 13-0 Dexter.

The Wolverines were able to score their first points of the game a short time later as Tyler Romans scored on a 44-yard run. The extra point kick was good and the deficit was at 13-7.

The Demons would answer the call left by Texico as Sergio Ramirez took the kick off and ran 92-yards into the end zone. Dexter was able to make the two-point conversion and the score was 21-7 with 4:56 left in the opening period.

Texico had trouble handling the kickoff and the Demons recovered. Despite some penalties called on the home team they were able to score the last points of the first quarter as Cobos scored on a 28-yard reception. The extra point kick was good and it was 28-7 with 2:48 left on the scoreboard.

Early in the second quarter, Dexter scored again as Elijah Flores scored on a 36-yard run. The Demons couldn’t convert the extra point and it was 34-7 with 10:40 left on the clock.

For the rest of the first half and lasting into a good portion of the second half neither team could score as penalties and fumbles were the main feature.

Dexter was able to score again in the opening seconds of the final period as Texico quarterback Craig Ray was smothered in his own end zone for a safety. Dexter went up 36-7 with 11:10 left in the game.

In the final stages of the contest the Demons tried to boot a 35-yard field goal. It fell short and with 1:45 left to play Texico was able to get their final points of the night as Cayd Bilbrey scored on a 36-yard reception. The extra point was no good. It didn’t matter as Dexter moves to the next round of the playoffs.
