On Tuesday evening in Roswell, NMMI took on the Goddard Lady Rockets “C” team and was defeated 35-27.
The Lady Colts outscored the Lady Rockets 7-6, thanks to an early three-pointer by Tianna Tsosie. Geraldlynn Notah and Rilan Maloney added a bucket each in the first quarter.
NMMI had a multitude of turnovers that allowed Goddard to run their fast break offense and the Rockets height advantage allowed them to make shots from point blank range. Head coach Marisha Olesinski said, “We could not control their height and that was a different experience for my girls, but we had some control over other aspects of the game and didn’t take advantage of them.”
Goddard outscored the Lady Colts 13-4 and took a 19-11 lead into halftime. “We had way too many turnovers again and that is really frustrating, but we played the best we could,” added Olesinski.
The second quarter proved to be the Lady Colts downfall as every other quarter was a one point differential between the teams.
NMMI matched Goddard’s second half output of 16 points. The Lady Colts outscored the Lady Rockets 8-7 in the third and Goddard returned the favor 9-8 in the fourth to maintain their advantage and give them the victory.
Maloney and Tsosie led the balanced NMMI attack with eight points, Demitra Ulibarri added seven, Notah with three and Abigail Valadez scored one to round out the scoring for the Lady Colts.
For Goddard, Jazmine Prudencio led all scoring with 14 points, Sophia Price added eight, Alyssa Hernandez scored five, Olivia Berding and Tori Price had four.
