Roswell wins against nemesis

If there were any doubts about Roswell’s basketball coach Moses “Dude” Burrola’s ability to coach and win against elite competition, he checked that box off with a 68-60 win over Hobbs Friday afternoon at the Bobby Rodriguez Capital City Tournament.

For a little less than a week, Burrola had his team working against the press as if they were preparing for a final exam. They were, and they passed, but there is still work to be done.

Coach Burrola wasn’t happy about the way his team let Hobbs come back from 14 points down at the Coyote Den on last Saturday night, and the way the Eagles gloated on their floor.

“Down the stretch, we were having trouble inbounding the ball,” coach Burrola said. “I had to make an adjustment and put Taymon Burrola in. We were able to hang on and find a way to get it done.”

Hobbs had trouble keeping up with the more athletic Coyotes, getting into foul trouble. Hobbs big man Clay Strasner got into foul trouble early in the game and was hampered the rest of the game, eventually fouling out early in the fourth quarter as Roswell made 14-of-15 down the stretch. Tarren Burrola was perfect from the line going 10-of-10, and Logan Eaker was 9-of-10 as the game came down to a foul shooting contest. The Coyotes made 30-of-37 for the game.

“Once Strasner got into foul trouble early,” coach Burrola said, “they’re a different team.” “He’s a workhorse for them and without him; they struggled offensively. Once we made good passes up the court, we were able to score. We just have to learn to make good fundamental passes and decisions, and we will be fine.”

Roswell received big contributions from Cristian de la O, Dominic Nava, and Taymon Burrola handled the ball to help break Hobbs’ press while making a good decision with the ball. Isaiah Carmona played with great intensity on the defensive end of the floor.

Games like this are only going to make the Coyotes stronger as they played with Jasia Reese, who is out indefinitely with a broken nose.

The teams play a round robin, Capital and Roswell are the only undefeated teams left. If Hobbs defeats Capital when they play at 3:30 p.m. today and Roswell wins against Santa Fe, then the Coyotes will win the tournament because they would be the only undefeated team.

Tarren Burrola scored 23 points, Eaker added 18 with Taymon putting in 10, and Carmona had eight.

“We have to take the effort we gave tonight into the game against Santa Fe.

Roswell plays Santa Fe at 7 p.m. today.

Ruidoso 73, Dexter 67

Dexter played good basketball for three quarters against Ruidoso, but the one bad quarter burned them. Defensive stopper Nick Cobos fouled out, and that was the difference in the game.

‘We need to have every kid playing to a high caliber of play every game,” Dexter coach Arthur Cobos said. “We will get there. I’m glad to see a majority of the team contributing in scoring.

Jaime Chavira scored 15 points. David Miramontes put in 14, Sergio Ramirez added 11, with Jaime Munoz adding 10, and Joe Cobos chipped in with eight.

Dexter will play the winner of Tularosa and Tucumcari at 5 p.m. today.

Girls

Onate 52, Lady Coyotes 42

Roswell played well for three quarters, the quarter they didn’t was when Onate went on an 11-0 run, the Lady Coyotes could not recover. Kaitlin Holl led the way in scoring for the Lady Coyotes with 16 points, and Grace Velazco put in eight points.

“We are going to have to keep working,” Roswell coach Fernando Sanchez said. “We will keep coaching them up and keep improving. We are a team that is working on coming together. We’re making small steps, but as a team, we feel we can take bigger steps. Our schedule doesn’t give us a chance to have an off night or even an off two minutes.”

Because of the shooting at Aztec High School this week, the game with Roswell is canceled.

Roswell will play Carlsbad at home at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
