ARTESIA — One hundred Artesia area children got an early Christmas present this past weekend thanks to some help from the community and public safety personnel.

“The evening consisted of meeting with the children,” said Artesia Police Commander Lindell Smith.

Shop with a Hero took place Saturday with pizza, pictures with Santa Claus and a parade that covered most of the streets in the community.

Smith said Walmart was the final destination for the young Christmas shoppers.

“The kids got to pick their own things, they weren’t guided by us at all, unless they asked for guidance,” he said.

He added that the kids had $100 to spend.

Smith added that the kids had to go through a selection process starting with letters sent to the Shop with a Hero committee.

“They receive recommendations from schools and churches concerning kids that might be in need and then their parents are contacted and the process just kind of goes on from there,” he said.

Smith has participated with Shop with a Hero for a number of years.

“It’s really neat to meet the kids as they go through the school system. Of course, we don’t meet all of the kids, but the ones we do run into that take on the Shop with a Hero experience are always respectful,” he said.

He added, “it’s really neat to meet them and spend time with them and hopefully be able to do something about a relationship between any public safety agency and the kids, because those are the kids that we’re sworn to protect and serve and in a few years, those are the kids that are going to be manning the streets in these agencies, too.”

Smith added that plans are already in the works for next year’s Shop with a Hero and more information may be obtained by calling the Artesia Police Department.
