Gloria Caraway Shepard passed away peacefully on November 29, 2017, in Medford, Oregon, surrounded by her family. Gloria was born on October 15, 1928, in Monticello, Mississippi.
Her family moved to Roswell when Gloria was eight years old. Her mother, Jonnie Laura Caraway was the long-time manager of the Sweetbriar Shop and her father, George, was a salesman for McNally-Hall Motor Company. Gloria graduated from New Mexico State University in 1950 with a B.Sc. In Physical Education. She was a superb athlete, had her national ratings in basketball, taught swimming at Cahoon Park and for a time ran a Youth Center in Roswell.
On July 16, 1950, she married Robert Shepard in the First United Methodist Church of Roswell with her uncle, the Reverend Porter Caraway, officiating. Gloria and Robert had three sons, Steve, Roger, and John.
Gloria’s husband, Robert was a petroleum exploration geologist for Chevron and the family moved frequently throughout the Southwest until 1969 when they were transferred to Spain for 5 years.
After the boys grew up, Bob and Gloria moved to Yugoslavia for 7 years. The war began, they were forced to return to the States and eventually settled in Oregon.
Gloria is survived by her husband of 67 years, sons Steve of Williston, VT and Roger of Medford, OR, three grandchildren, Steve Jr., Cristina and Bobby, and two great-great-grand-daughters, Ayla and Maya. Gloria was a warm, loving wife and parent and we will miss her terribly.
