A suspect barricaded himself in a building in the 3800 block of East Pine Lodge Road and began shooting at police. The Roswell Police Department SWAT team were serving an arrest warrant and search warrant Tuesday morning.

The suspect continued to fire at police and was fatally shot by police, according to a statement released by the RPD.

The SWAT team initially arrived shortly before 9 a.m. Tuesday to serve the warrants, which related to an incident that occurred Monday night in Roswell. The East Pine Lodge location where the warrants were being served is outside the city limits, so Chaves County Sheriff’s Office deputies also were on scene to support the RPD SWAT team.

As is standard procedure, the officer-involved shooting will be investigated by a joint-agency investigation team involving New Mexico State Police, Chaves County Sheriff’s Office and the Roswell Police Department.

Todd Wildermuth, spokesperson for the RPD, said there was a structure fire during the encounter. He said the Roswell Fire Department responded, however, they were on standby while the suspect was being dealt with by law officers. He said no officers were injured during the incident.
