The American Automobile Association is asking that you plan ahead before celebrating the end of 2017 and the start of 2018.

AAA spokesperson Daniel Armbruster said people should designate a driver, call a cab or spend the night before having that first drink.

“As a last resort, AAA New Mexico offers a free community service called Tipsy Tow,” he said.

Armbruster said Tipsy Tow is available across the state and it is set to start at 6 p.m. on Dec. 31 and end at 6 a.m. on Jan. 1.

“You can call 1-800-222-4357 or 1-800-AAA-HELP and that’s for a free tow home up to 10 miles,” he said.

“You can request the Tipsy Tow program,” he added. “There are some restrictions. If you have to go above 10 miles, expect to pay the rate charged by the tow contractor involved.”

Armbruster said people who use Tipsy Tow don’t have to be AAA members.

If you don’t plan to celebrate with an adult beverage but would like to travel somewhere, Armbruster said you should make sure your vehicle is ready.

Checking the tire pressure is the first thing he recommends. “You don’t want to over-inflate or under-inflate.”

He also recommends that you check under the hood, making sure the belts and fluid levels are fine.
