Police were serving a warrant on James A. Berrones in connection with a domestic- violence incident involving a gun

James Alan Berrones, 46, is the deceased suspect on whom the Roswell Police Department was attempting to serve an arrest warrant Tuesday morning. Berrones was fatally shot by police after he fired gunshots at RPD SWAT team officers at his residence in the 3800 block of East Pine Lodge Road. RPD were assisted by Chaves County Sheriff’s Office deputies at the location northeast of the city, according to a released statement from the RPD. No law enforcement personnel were injured.

The arrest warrant, as well as a search warrant, the RPD officers were serving Tuesday when a standoff began about 9 a.m. — with Berrones refusing to exit the large shed he was in and the structure eventually catching fire — related to a domestic disturbance reported to RPD about 1:55 a.m. Tuesday.

During the domestic incident at the apartment of Berrones’ ex-girlfriend in the 1200 block of West McGaffey Street in Roswell, Berrones is alleged to have argued with his former girlfriend and then pointed a handgun at her, wrestled her to the ground, struck her in the face with the gun, and threatened to kill her if she called police. Berrones eventually left the apartment, according to RPD. RPD investigators obtained an arrest warrant — the one that was later being served at the East Pine Lodge Road location — that charged Berrones with aggravated battery against a household member, aggravated assault against a household member, battery upon a household member, intimidation of a witness and felon in possession of a firearm.

In June 2015, Berrones pleaded no contest to a fourth offense of aggravated DWI driving under the influence of an intoxicating liquor or drug, according to online court records.
