The Roswell High Coyotes fought through a tough first half against the Artesia Bulldogs Friday at the Coyote Den to earn a 69-53 win and a ticket to the Poe Corn Tournament championship game.

Today at 4 p.m. at Roswell High, the Goddard Rockets will be arriving to give the Coyotes all they can handle for the title of champion.

In the first quarter Friday, Roswell got on the scoreboard first with Logan Eaker making a two-pointer. Artesia’s Tyler Greenwood would fire right back at them with a 3-point shot. Much of this quarter would be a tightly contested tit for tat as both teams played aggressively, leading to nine Roswell fouls. Artesia only committed four fouls and outscored the Coyotes 18-13 at the end of the first.

Artesia’s Cody Smith got the second quarter off to a hot start by sinking a 3-pointer to increase the team’s lead to 8. After a Tarren Burrola foul on Smith led to another point for the Bulldogs, his brother Taymon would begin to get into his zone. Taymon Burrola sank two free throws and followed that up with another two points from the hardwood.

Tyler Greenwood would respond for Artesia with another three-pointer, followed by two 3-pointers from the Coyotes to pull them back into the game. Taymon sank another two point shot to pull Roswell within 2 points before the end of the quarter leaving them down, 33-31.

The third quarter proved to be a rallying point for the Coyotes as they held Artesia to 6 points while putting up 23 of their own. The offensive onslaught was led by Taymon with 9 points, while Eaker pitched in 6 points and Jasia Reese began to find his groove sinking three 2-point shots. The strong offensive and defensive play led the Coyotes to a 54-39 lead heading into the final quarter.

The final quarter would prove to be more of the back and forth of the first half than the drubbing of the third quarter. In the end Artesia couldn’t overcome Roswell’s offensive outburst as the Coyotes took the win to move onto the Poe Corn championship game today.
