LOS LUNAS — The Artesia High Lady Dogs(5-5) went 1-2 during the Valencia Holiday Tournament in Los Lunas which wrapped up Saturday.

“It was a good tournament for us,” said Jeff Houghtaling head basketball coach.

“I think the quality of the competition was fantastic,” he said.

He added the team learned a lot during their three day stay in Valencia County.

Artesia played Bloomfield on the opening day of the tournament which was Thursday.

“We came up short, they beat us by 13 (43-30),” Houghtaling said. “Had lots of opportunities in that game, I really thought we played good enough to win.”

He said Artesia had trouble at the foul line during the opening contest. “I really thought we could have shot better from the free-throw line.”

On Friday, the Lady Dogs took on Gadsden on the consolation side of the bracket. Artesia won 62-43.

“Gadsden’s a real gritty team,” Houghtaling said. “We had a little bit advantage in the paint size wise, we were able to get by them (and) in the consolation championship where we matched up with Santa Fe High.”

Houghtaling added, “we played tough and hard.”

Santa Fe won 48-45 in overtime.

“Overall I felt like the girls played hard and did a lot of real good things. I was disappointed in our foul shooting and a little bit in our composure in the second half of each game,” Houghtaling said.

Houghtaling said the team will take New Year’s Day off and then will practice on Jan. 2. Artesia hosts Portales that night at 7 p.m. Artesia will host Clovis on Jan. 5 and then travel to Deming Jan. 6.
