ARTESIA — “People just need to be careful with their money.”

Those are the words of Artesia Police Commander Lindell Smith after a scam was reported recently to his office.

According to information supplied by Smith, officers spoke to man on Jan. 4 regarding a telephone scam. The man told officers that he was contacted by someone who claimed to be with a company called P & E.

The caller was advised that he was behind on his natural gas bill and he needed to pay it or the gas was going to be turned off.

The reporting party was then told that he needed to go to Family Dollar in Artesia and come up with $1,454,95 in order to pay his bill.

APD said the attempted scam didn’t work and people need to be careful with their money as scams make it difficult to retrieve money or other goods after a transaction has taken place.
