DEXTER – The Dexter Lady Demons got their initial district win of the season as they shook off a sloppy opening quarter to down the visiting Capitan Tigers 57-32 inside Lewis Gym. The Demons turned a 10-8 first quarter deficit around in quick fashion and raced away with the win to improve to 9-10 on the year including 1-2 in district 4-3A.

The Tigers (7-10) played a physical, scrappy, hustling brand of basketball but could not get anything going offensively in the 2nd and 3rd quarters as they lost their fifth in a row and fell to a dismal 0-3 in the district.

“We did play a little sloppy in the first quarter, but we calmed down and they settled down and started playing our style of basketball,” said Demons coach Betty Elizondo. “They are playing together and working hard. They played an excellent game tonight. I’m proud of them.”

The Demons made numerous errors in the opening quarter as they could not get untracked. Vianey Villalobos got two early buckets, but the Tigers kept pace and it was tied 4-all midway through the quarter. Fellow senior Madison Bogle would get two freebies and a late bucket with :10 seconds to go, but the hosts still trailed 10-8 after one.

Bogle scored 30 seconds into the second quarter to tie the game but the Demons would not hit another hoop until the 3:16 mark. The Tigers managed only one hoop of their own in that stretch as the Demons and Tigers were tied at 13-all with three and half to go.

Villalobos then got the team in stride as she hit an outside shot and then followed it up with one off of an offensive board. About a minute later she hit a three and the Demons were up 21-13. She then fed a nice pass to Anayee Carlos for a bucket and the Demons were up 23-13 to culminate an 11-0 run. Coach Elizondo gave a lot of credit to Villalobos in the run stating “she’s the one that gave us that spark. She got us going.”

Carlos would score again and Marlou Blankvoort would hit two freebies late and the Demons were up 27-15 at the break having held the Tigers to one basket and three free throws in the quarter. Villalobos would have 13 of her game-high 20 in the first half.

The third quarter saw Alyssa Madden hit two threes to make it 35-18 as the Demons started to take control. Her first three ignited a 13-0 Demon run to make it 40-18 midway through the quarter.

“When Alyssa started hitting those three’s, they had to call a timeout and adjust,” said Elizondo. “That’s when they went to the man D and we just kind of spread it out and worked it around. The girls played well and they played with each other and they did an excellent job tonight.”

Blankvoort would hit the third trey of the quarter and Madison Bogle would hit two free throws to make it 46-20 heading to the final frame. Bogle would score 13 on the night despite being in foul trouble.

The final quarter saw the lead stretch to as much as 29 points as the game dwindled down to fouls and free throw attempts by both squads. Villalobos made another three and hit three free throws in the final quarte as the lead grew to 55-26 until the Tigers finished up the game on a 6-2 run to make the final 57-32 and give them their first home win since December 15th.

The Demons, who start all seniors, travel to Loving on Saturday for an afternoon matinee with the Lady Falcons.
