ARTESIA — Some people may find it interesting that someone with the last name of Hardt would sink a key basket for the Artesia Bulldogs (17-7, 4-1) in their Tuesday night contest against the Roswell Coyotes (18-7, 3-2).

At the start of the game, both teams had 3-1 district records however it was Artesia winning in the last stages 53-50.

The game went back-and-forth in the second half and Roswell sophomore Jasia Reese sank a basket with under a minute left to play in the game that saw the Coyotes take a 50-49 lead.

No second half lead was safe for either side in the contest at the Bulldog Pit as senior’s Tyler Greenwood and Chaney Hardt gave the home crowd an early Valentine’s Day present.

Reese was Roswell’s leading scorer with 14 points. He had six of those points in the first half. Artesia kept him quiet in the third period and in the fourth he had four points from the floor and the rest came from the foul line.

However, they outscored Artesia in the first period of the second half and had a 36-35 lead going into the final stanza of the game.

Hardt had 9 points for the Bulldogs and Greenwood had 11. Besides Greenwood’s last-second heroics in the fourth period, he was also perfect from the foul line as well with four points.

Artesia senior Joe Willingham was the leading scorer with 19. Most of those points came in the opening half. Although he did make some clutch baskets in the second half to help his team keep pace with the visitors.

The win puts the Bulldogs in a key position as the regular season ends Friday at the Bulldog Pit with a contest against the Goddard Rockets.

The opening game of the district twin bill saw the Artesia Lady Dogs (14-11, 3-2) defeat the Roswell Lady Coyotes(8-15, 2-3) 41-32.

Artesia was able to maintain the lead throughout the game, the Lady Coyotes tried to make a run at the Lady Dogs in the closing stages of the game. However, some key foul shots by Martinez and fellow senior Alexa Riggs kept in Roswell in check.

Senior Kaitlyn Holl was Roswell’s leading scorer with 10 points and junior Cheyenne Martinez had 6 for the Lady Coyotes.
