Investigators from the Roswell Police Department are working to speak with a local man who has been listed as a person of interest for the drive-by shooting that killed 33-year-old Tess Jauregui in southwest Roswell Feb. 7.

According to a news release by the RPD’s public information officer, Todd Wildermuth, anyone with information that could potentially help locate 21-year-old Fernando Miguel Ortega is asked to call the Roswell Police Department at 575-624-6770 or Chaves County Crime Stoppers at 888-594-8477.

Police said Ortega is about 5 feet, 7 inches in height, weighing about 160 pounds. The RPD also said Ortega has brown hair, brown eyes, and a tattoo on his right hand.

“The shooting occurred Feb. 7 around 10:30 p.m. at the Sunrise Mobile Home Park in the 1200 block of West Hobbs Street,” Wildermuth said. “Multiple gunshots were fired during the incident, and the shots struck two mobile homes. At least one of the shots reached the inside of one of the homes, striking Jauregui inside the home. She died at the scene. No one else was injured.”

According to online court records, Ortega was charged with possession of a controlled substance and use or possession of drug paraphernalia in March 2016. On Oct. 13, 2017, Ortega was released by the State of New Mexico Correction Department after serving probation sentence of one year, two months and 30 days.
