Born May 1, 1945, in Lawton, OK to Paul and Marie Winham.
Even being quite ill, he achieved the age of 72, which is 17 years more than the doctors thought he would achieve with his failing physical heart; his wife believes it was his strong spiritual heart and love for preaching about God that kept him alive so long – he breathed his last physical breath in his home, while his wife held him, on Wednesday, February 7, 2018.
He was married for 49 ½ years to his childhood sweetheart, Rita Sue (Suzie) Winham. God obviously had other plans for this Christian couple because they were not blessed with any physical children. Instead, they adopted an orphan girl in Assam, India, whom they have supported to this day since 2005.
In his early teaching career, Steve taught Spanish in the public schools, first in Floyd, NM, for two years, then in Dexter for 13 years, where he also coached.
He was awarded for an Administrative Degree in Education while living in California and served as Senior Director for a federally funded migrant program which assisted migratory farmworker families to maintain their children’s school levels and records. He retired from that position in June 2013, and he and Suzie moved to Las Cruces.
His Christian ethics and morals made such an impact on those who knew him, that on of his fellow coaches at Dexter told him one time, “Steve, you always do the right thing.” Steve replied to him, “I try to always do what’s right because it is the right thing to do.” That was Steve. He was honest, true and loyal even when it was not always easy or the “in thing”.
He is survived by his wife Rita Sue (Suzie) Winham of Las Cruces, an older brother, Troy Winham and Troy’s wife Kay, of Roswell, three nieces – Kathy Winham Jennings, Debbie Winham Campos, and Diane Winham Terry, all of Roswell. Also, Steve has several nephews, nieces and grandnephews.
In lieu of flowers, any free will memorial gifts may be sent in his memory to:
