Xcel Energy warns public of scam attempts in Dexter

Some would-be scammers have tried to trick Dexter residents, according to Xcel Energy employees.

The company reported Tuesday that some of its Roswell staff were notified by Dexter customers of a potential scam directing them to pay their bill to some entity other than the electric utility.

Xcel stated that the recent activity is similar to attempted scams reported earlier. A customer receives a call from someone impersonating an Xcel Energy customer agent, and the scammer warns that a serviceman is en route to disconnect the customer’s service if a past-due bill is not paid.

In the cases reported Monday, the scammer was directing people to a discount retail store in Dexter to make a payment, the Xcel release stated.

Xcel wants to remind its customers that it always mails a printed disconnect notice to customers who have fallen behind on their bills. They recommend that customers who receive these calls contact Xcel Energy at 800-895-4999 to verify account status and make payments in the appropriate ways.

Todd Wildermuth, spokesperson for the Roswell Police Department, said that people have reported such a scam to the police in the past.

“The various scam plots come and go,” he said.

Anyone who thinks that he or she might be the victim of a scam can call the Roswell Police at 575-624-6770.
