Local club plants seeds for gardens, youth

Marie Ferreira, center, a 7th grade student in Roswell, brushes the dirt out of a wooden box as one of the steps in preparing a starter planter during a Saturday afternoon meeting of the Pecos Valley Youth Garden Club held at the Roswell Adult and Recreation Center. Ferreira is the new president of the youth group, a program of the local Home Garden Club that is in its third year. About 30 area youth belong for free to the club, including Mason Eden, on left, and Ryder Deen. The club meets monthly, usually on the fourth Saturday, according to organizer Renate Reisel, and engages in such activities as creating and maintaining a butterfly garden and bird feeders at the Spring River Park and Zoo, decorating and donating cookies to the Community Kitchen for Christmas, and making turkey and chili ristras during the Thanksgiving season.
