Well, here we go again with more proposals to close country roads that provide access to public lands.

Our County Commissioners did not pay any attention to concerns expressed by a great number of people during the closing of Felix Canyon Road. Let’s make sure that does not happen again. Please join ACCESS New Mexico and help us keep access open to our public lands.

Public lands are important for American families to enjoy the recreational activities that these lands provide, such as bird watching, hiking, fishing, hunting and many more activities. There has been a trend in Chaves County in the last few years to close roads that allow access to these lands. The more public land we lose, the more we lose out on our New Mexican way of life.

The most recent example is the Felix Canyon Road. This public road provided a crucial access point to premium public land. Now it is closed. The current proposed road closures include three more roads in that area that make access more difficult. This should never happen. I don’t want to see our state’s outdoor heritage taken away because our commission may not keep our county access roads open. I encourage everyone to contact your County Commissioner and tell them you oppose the closing of any more county roads that give access to our public lands.

Get involved! Call your County Commissioner and let them know we are serious about this. Join Access New Mexico and help with time, donations or getting the word out. Remember these are elected officials that are supposed to be looking out for our best interests, not just a few of their buddies.
