Maybe you work two or three part-time jobs to make ends meet. If that’s the case, you probably don’t have employer-sponsored health insurance. Further, you probably make too much money to qualify for Medicare.

New Mexico Mission of Mercy is seeking volunteers and patients for a two-day Remote Area Medical (RAM) clinic providing free dental, vision and medical care at Roswell High School, April 14 and 15.

The nonprofit is seeking individuals and organizations to volunteer their services to help make this event a success.

The Remote Area Medical clinic is hosted by the New Mexico Dental Association Foundation in partnership with the New Mexico Dental Association.

This charity event will provide free basic dental care, including cleaning, fillings and extractions, basic medical services and multiple vision lanes offering free eye exams and prescription glasses. All services will be delivered by volunteer doctors and dentists and are free to adults and children on a first-come, first-serve basis, with no ID or income information required.

Local dentist Keon Ahghar, who has been involved with Mission of Mercy since 2010, is the organizer of the event.

“There is a lot of need in our community and we only make our community stronger when we help each,” he said. “My goal is to do this every year and expand into other communities.”

An event of this scale requires the generosity of the community to be a success, Ahghar said. General support volunteers are needed to assist with set-up, parking, hospitality, registration, patient escort, translation, tear down and much more.

Patient numbers will be handed out starting at 3 a.m. the morning of each clinic day. You must be present to receive a number. Clinic doors open at 6 a.m. No appointments will be taken or are necessary. The number of patients seen will be limited by clinic capacity.

What to bring

• The line to enter the clinic will be outside so dress appropriately for weather conditions.

• Food and drinks will not be provided.

• You will wait your turn to enter the clinic, and then wait to see the dentists and/or dental hygienists, so bring reading, electronic devices, crossword puzzles or other items to fill your time.

No childcare will be provided.

RAM is asking that individuals and organizations willing to give of their time and talents to register as soon as possible. Visit ramusa.org/voluneer or call 865-579-1530 to learn more.
