Pull over to honor veterans’ funeral

I would like to give a special thank you to all the sheriff’s department, RPD and fire department employees who provided their support this past Monday for the escort through Roswell for the James Tharp family as the Patriot Guard Riders escorted his remains to Fort Stanton for burial. James was an Air Force Veteran.

Also, thanks to all the citizens who recognized the procession, and had the courtesy to pull over and wait the few minutes it took to pass by. On rare occasions some drivers feel they are more important than a family who just lost a loved one and try to cut through just to save a few minutes out of their day, sometimes making a dangerous move, endangering the riders and cars in the procession.

If you see a group of motorcycles with flags flying, with or without a police escort, please wait. It is an escort for a military funeral. Honor the veteran and pull over.

The Patriot Guard Riders is a volunteer organization of veterans and non-veterans who wish to honor a fallen hero. You don’t need a motorcycle and there are no dues, just a desire to show respect and stand holding a flag for the deceased. Once again, thanks to all the officers and first responders for their help with the escort.
