April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. To bring awareness to our community, CYFD (New Mexico Child, Youth and Families Department) and CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) will be hosting a child abuse prevention carnival from 5 to 7 p.m. This family oriented event will be held in the CYFD parking lot at No. 4 Grand Avenue Plaza in Roswell.

Child abuse and neglect is a serious problem in Chaves County. Currently in Chaves County, there are 81 children in foster care due to abuse and neglect. CYFD has received around 2,030 reports of suspected child abuse over the past 14 months.

There will be free train rides, face painting, pony rides, cookie decorating and plenty of other activities for children. Booths highlighting resources available in our community also will be on site.

There will be free hot dogs, snow cones and beverages for all to enjoy. If you would like to have a booth at the carnival or need more information, call Renee Fitts at 575-626-9612.
