Clara was born to John Birdsong and Mary Garrett in Boswell, TX. Clara lived more than 50 years in Artesia, NM, in the same home and was blessed with many lifelong neighbors and friends. She lived her life with a servant’s heart. Clara focused her life on raising her children, waiting on her friends as a waitress and cooking some of the finest pies to be found. Even after retirement, Clara worked as a caregiver for those in need. People loved her baking of pastries such as pies, cinnamon rolls, and homemade yeast rolls. At Jackson’s restaurant, she was known for making three to four days worth of pies a week that sold out by the first morning once people knew it was “Clara’s day to make pies”. She had a group of customers that were happy to follow her wherever she was working, to enjoy her amazing cooking. Clara had a passion for crocheting, embroidering, fishing and camping.

She won numerous blue ribbons in the county fair for her flawless and meticulous sewing, crocheting, and embroidering. She saw to it that each one of her children and grandchildren had a piece of her work. Clara taught square dancing classes for many years at the Artesia community center. She loved to dance – two stepping, waltzing, and doing the jitterbug. Clara bowled on a league several nights of the week for many years. Her daughters learned to do their homework by the sound of clashing pins very well! Clara enjoyed fishing and camping during her retirement years. Sitting by the side of the lake was as close as to heaven she could get in this great world.

Clara was preceded in death by parents: John and Mary; husbands: J.T. Rainwater, Glenn Perry, and James Kirby; grandson, Walker Fitzpatrick Jr; step-son, Gene Perry, step-daughter, Patsy Devore; brothers: John, Doc, Jess, Joe, Troy, Luther; sisters: Grace and Dessie.
