Leadership New Mexico announced that Marlin Johnson, Chaves County planning director, is among the 21 statewide professionals who recently graduated from the 16th Local Government Leadership Program.

The Local Government Leadership Program is an educational partnership between the New Mexico Association of Counties, the New Mexico Municipal League, the New Mexico School Boards Association and Leadership New Mexico. These organizations joined together to provide a unique educational experience to county and municipal officials, school board members, members of the New Mexico National Guard and regional councils of governments.

The Local Government Leadership Program curriculum is patterned after Leadership New Mexico’s Core Program, and is designed to provide local leaders the opportunity to explore the critical issues facing New Mexico and participate in skill-building workshops. The program seeks to prepare local officials with the background and knowledge necessary to undertake their civic responsibility and instill in them a passion for effective and ethical public service. Since its inception in 2002, the Local Government Leadership Program has held 16 programs with a total of 346 participants. These participants represent 41 municipalities, 27 counties, 14 school districts and two regional councils of government, and there have been 10 New Mexico National Guard participants.

Since its founding in 1995, Leadership New Mexico has provided a non-partisan perspective on statewide topics of concern and opportunities for improvement. The organization identifies current and emerging leaders throughout New Mexico, enhances their leadership skills and deepens their knowledge of the challenges and opportunities facing our state. The Core Program, Local Government Leadership Program, and Connect New Mexico Program contribute to developing a larger understanding of these issues and ultimately prepare the leaders to meet these challenges with innovation and enthusiasm.

Since Leadership New Mexico’s inception, nearly 1,600 participants from 85 communities across the state have explored the issues facing our state through participation in Leadership New Mexico programs.
